Reconciliation
Tule, organza & satin
During summer 2024, a group of youths from Skärholmen district in the suburbs of Stockholm, Sweden, have worked with poetry as a tool to share their thoughts, feelings, and stories.
“Reconciliation” is a textile sculpture created based on the poem ‘Searching for My Place’ written by Sandra Al-Asadi during summer of 2024 as a part of the Poetry Walk project. The poem explores a person’s struggle for self-acceptance and finding their place in a world that judges and misunderstands them because of their ADHD, while also carrying an inner strength and hope to be seen and to accept themselves just as they are.
The beauty of accepting and being oneself instead of trying to be like others is central to the textile sculpture. The work visualizes the whirlwind of thoughts and emotions described in the poem, where light and freedom await at the end of the tunnel. The right side symbolizes loneliness, while the left side depicts complex thought patterns reflecting the experience of living with ADHD. Reflective materials have been used to represent light and self-reflection — elements that have been crucial in maintaining hope and strength to keep fighting.
